From Oxonium, Oxon, Oxford's latin name, Oxfordshire is a South East England county. In Berkshire are the areas south of the Thames, the Vale of White Horse and parts of South Oxfordshire, as is the highest point, the 261 metres (856 ft) White Horse Hill.

Lies between the River Thames to the south, the Cotswolds to the west, the Chilterns to the east and to the north the Midlands, with north running spurs to Banbury, Oxfordshire and south to Henley-on-Thames was recorded as a county in the 10th century. Generating wealth, particularly in the western portions of the county in the Oxfordshire Cotswolds, the area was part of the Cotswolds wool trade from the 13th century.

Administratively in Berkshire, Reading's Caversham area was part of Oxfordshire historically as was the Stokenchurch parish, now administratively in Buckinghamshire. Parts of Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty are included in Oxfordshire.

Cherwell, Oxford, (after the Uffington White Horse) Vale of White Horse, South Oxfordshire, and West Oxfordshire which deal with such matters as town and country planning, waste collection, and housing, include local government districts that the county is divided into. Eight schools in South Oxfordshire and Cherwell districts mostly do not have a sixth form. With a population that is lower than Buckinghamshire and Berkshire neighbours, which are both smaller, Oxfordshire remains an agricultural county by land use.

The main unit in the area, Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry, was based in Cowley, on Bullingdon Green. In 1974 Abingdon, Didcot, Faringdon, Wallingford and Wantage were added to Oxfordshire under the LGA 1972, but the district of Vale of White Horse and the district that is administrative of South Oxfordshire parts, to the River Thames' south were, of Berkshire, a part.

With figures in millions of British pounds sterling, the Office for National Statistics published a chart of trend of gross value added of Oxfordshire at current prices. With 23 independent schools and 35 ss schools, Oxfordshire has a comprehensive education system.
